PAST GREENLAND TRAVEL REPORTS
We have explored the Ilimaussaq Complex in South Greenland dozens of times since 2001. A few times we did it alone, but usually it was in the company of several other intrepid explorers. The first few times we wrote some extensive trip reports covering this amazing locality in as much depth as we could muster. Other folks also wrote trip reports and either published them on their own websites, or in the Fluorescent Mineral Society UV Waves newsletter.
We've taken several of these write-ups and combined them for publication here:
The first, a 2008 Trip Report, shows what a single tour was like. We included many Greenland photos.
The second - "Howie and his White Whale" is a combined report of one man's initial trip and how it turned into a subsequent quest for "Ahab's white whale" of fluorescent minerals - and became an obsession. (Howie has visited the complex with me every year except for the first.)
The third is a compilation of several reports we wrote in the early years. Lots of pictures from Greenland and of fluorescent minerals found during these trips (many taken before we really got very good at fluorescent photography, but they get the point across). Lots of Greenland landscape pictures....
Nine newly discovered fluorescent collecting
localities were discovered within the Ilimaussaq Complex:
- Taseq Slope, east and west, Fantasy Rock and
Taseq Tugtupite - Steenstrupe Field yielding magnificent specimens
of sorensenite - Five localities on the Tunuliarfik Fjord,
including the famous sodalite beach, as well as Tugtup Aktoforia, the type
locale for tugtupite - Kangerlussaq yielding amazing specimens of
tugtupite and polylithionite
We also made several presentations about the fluorescent Greenland minerals. An early study is posted below as a PDF file.
